Blocks of the Month
This page contains the 2009 Blocks of the Month.
NOTE: All blocks this year are 12” finished (12-1/2” including seam allowances).
NOTE: Please, if you square up your blocks, be sure to leave 1/4” seam allowances for any points on the edges of the blocks. If your block is slightly large, it is better to leave the seam allowances for the block winner to ease in the block, rather than blunt the points! If you trim to the points, there is no way to use the block without blunting the points, or remaking the block!

JANUARY
Block: Free Choice - you pick the block pattern
Colors: Black, White, plus one bright color of your choice
There are lots of blocks available on the web as free downloads. Just make sure the finished block size is 12” (12-1/2” with seam allowances). The block can be pieced, appliqued, paper pieced, or even embroidered. The choice is yours!

FEBRUARY
Block: Autograph Star - Pattern
Colors: Color 1 in juvenile print (suitable for elementary-aged boys or girls); Color 2 White. The white center must be a solid white, no tone-on-tone, since this will be left blank for the block winner to write upon.
MARCH
Block: Jack’s Delight - Pattern
Colors: Lavender(s) and yellow(s). The background, hot pink, and purple shown in the pattern are to be replaced with your choices of dark, medium, or light of lavender and yellow. Use both lavender and yellow in your block. Yellow(s) or Lavender(s) may be used for A, B, and C in the pattern. That is, A may be either yellow or lavender, B yellow or lavender, and C yellow or lavender.
OCTOBER
Block: Square in a Star - Pattern
Colors: Christmas prints. The center will be provided by the club.
NOTE: Be sure to leave the 1/4” seam allowances at the outside edges, so the points will not be blunted when the block is sewn into a quilt.
AUGUST
Block: 9-patch - Pattern
Colors: Your choice of colors, but with the center and four corners dark and the other squares medium or light. Just piece the block and the winner will have the option of cutting the blocks to make the disappearing 9-patch pattern from them.
NOTE: If the block will be used for the Disappearing 9-patch, please make the center square a different dark color than the four corner squares.
See Disappearing 9-patch photos.
APRIL
Block: Sunbonnet Sue
Colors: Background block is unbleached muslin. Applique the Sunbonnet Sue of your choice in 1930’s colors and prints. The applique method is your choice. The sample block is fused and satin stitched. Tradiltional blocks are appliqued with a simple hidden stitch, or a blanket stitch.

MAY
Block: Nosegay - Pattern
Colors: Use the green fabric supplied by the club for the vase and the neutral supplied for the background. The rest of the colors are scrappy colors of your choice.
NOTE: When printing out the templates, pay particular attention to the 1” key square! Place your ruler over the square to make sure your printer printed the square exactly 1” square. Your templates must be accurate to result in your block being 12-1/2” square (including seam allowances).
NOTE: Be sure to leave the 1/4” seam allowances at the outside edges, so the points will not be blunted when the block is sewn into a quilt.
JUNE
Block: Birdhouses - Pattern
Colors: Your choice of colors. These are paper-pieced blocks. There will be a workshop in April on paper piecing, using one or more of the birdhouses in this block. You may embellish the birdhouses with buttons (as shown) or by appliqueing yo-yo’s or circles for the openings.
DECEMBER

NOTE: files ~300 KB each
Pattern (WindyMSnowman.pdf) and
Directions (WindyMS-directions.pdf)
